Characteristics

Medes Islands are located off Estartit (less than 1 mile), at the northern end of Spain's Costa Brava. This is a national park and dives are regulated (Annual dives were around the 80,000 mark in 1994 but have now been restricted to 60,000 - 400 a day - to protect the reserve).

The Medes Islands comprise two main islands - Meda Gran and Meda Petita - with numerous large outlying rocks and pinnacles that have been carved out by erosion and the action of the sea.

There is a incredible quantity of fishs in this marine park, including huge and numerous groopers !

Some caves are welle known such as the Dolphin's cave (Tunels del Dofi) and the Cow cave (Cova de la Vaca).

Enjoy Estartit !

Better viz, good dive
With JC: Last dive to Estartit. The wind was fine. Viz clearly better (10m+ up to 15m near 30m). We met 5 eagle rays, a tons of groupers, bécunes (sort of baracudas), corbs, big scorpionfishes (chapon). Then back to Feranelles for safety stop.

Poor viz, poor dive
With Patrick M. & Seb: Bad viz again. We did a tour and finally found a lobster in a hole. Themain wall has a lot of red coral, found some octopuses nearby. This is clearly a first dive/training dive site, or second dive when good viz!

Bis repetita...
With Patrick M. & Seb: Second dive to the Dolphin (South)dive site. This time again, viz was poor, but better than the first time. We did a tour to the big tunnel entrance, then back to Aïri's cave along the boulders in the middle of the

Poor viz, poor dive
With Valentine & Yannick: Valentine did her first orientation dive. This was quite easy: Follow the reef right-hand, then back to the seahorse area with the sun in our back (but no seahorses found!). The small deep cave/crack was also nice with a

Medes
I learnt to dive here 5 years ago and have dived the islands many times since. Though the marine life cannot be compared to the likes of the Red Sea, for either the diversity or the abundance of, these islands are something special. The weather can be a bit 'hit and miss' dependant upon the time of year you visit and some of the swells I have experienced at the largest of the islands (Meda gran) certainly test the diver. All in all a good place to dive and home of some of the biggest grouper you will encounter, with a strange liking of boiled eggs!!!!
