The Wellington coast is very rugged, but has some great dive sites. The most well known is Kapiti Island (a marine reserve established in 1992), and also the HMNZS Wellington wreck (F69).
Other dive sites of the area: Castle Point, Flat Point, Palliser Bay, Makara Beach, Pukerua Bay, Hunters Bank, Mana Island, Makara etc.
