Islas Secas (meaning 'Dry Islands')
16 miles south-east of Boca Chica, the Islas Secas are a small archipelago of islands, some with beautiful white sandy beaches. These are the closest islands for diving and harbour more than ten dive sites. All the islands are uninhabited except for one which has a small exclusive resort, these islands offer perfect beach stops between dives.
The diving around the islands has some very good visibility during the dry months and is home to many fish that congregate around the rocky and coral outcrops as well as forming large schools. White tip reefs sharks, nurse sharks, spotted Eagle rays and turtles are also encountered frequently as are free swimming Moray eels, lobster and Nudibranchs.Humpback whales migrate past here and are often seen from the boat as they surface, breach or raise a tail fluke before sinking back in to the water.
There are dives here for all levels of diver.
Time to dive sites: 30 – 40 minutes
Depths: between 15 - 35 meters.
Isla Ladrones (meaning 'Thieves Islands')
These rugged volcanic islands, 27 miles due south of Boca Chica, sit close to the continental shelf and offer some excellent diving. The underwater topography is defined by pinnacles, large boulders, rocky out-crops and drop offs with intermittent patches of hard and soft coral.
The islands and the approaching waters harbour numerous and varied dive sites as well as an abundance of marine life. The density of fish life is often staggering as schools of jack, barracuda and snapper swirl around the rocks and pinnacles that are sometimes densely populated with smaller reef species like; Angelfish, Damselfish, Surgeonfish, Parrotfish, Triggerfish, Wrasse, Gobies, Blennies and Morish Idols.
Close encounters with giant Manta can be frequent from May to November and encounters with Sharks and other Rays (Eagle, Mobula and Devil) can be year round.
The best visibility is from December to May and on an outgoing tide when visibility can get up to 100ft. The diving here is certainly more advanced as you can expect to come across strong currents and cold water.
These islands offer some excellent diving with opportunities for large marine life encounters.
Time to dive sites: 50minutes to 1hr
