The Costa Brava is a coastal region of northeastern Catalonia, Spain, in the comarques of Alt Empordą, Baix Empordą and La Selva, in the province of Girona. Costa is the Catalan and Spanish word for 'coast', and Brava means 'rugged' or 'wild'. The Costa Brava stretches from Blanes, 60km northeast of Barcelona, to the French border.
In 1998 coastal towns of the Costa Brava signed a charter the Carta de Tossa which undertook to pursue environmental protection along with tourism. This recognised the value of the region's wide range of natural habitats and micro-climates. The Illes Medes off the coast of L'Estartit is Spain's first maritime nature reserve and it provides a home to a wide range of fish and acquatic flora. The nearby wildfowl reserve on marshlands at l'Emporda also saved land from the potential ravages of development. |

Better viz, good dive
With JC: Last dive to Estartit. The wind was fine. Viz clearly better (10m+ up to 15m near 30m). We met 5 eagle rays, a tons of groupers, bécunes (sort of baracudas), corbs, big scorpionfishes (chapon). Then back to Feranelles for safety stop.

Poor viz, poor dive
With Patrick M. & Seb: Bad viz again. We did a tour and finally found a lobster in a hole. Themain wall has a lot of red coral, found some octopuses nearby. This is clearly a first dive/training dive site, or second dive when good viz!

With Valentine & Yannick: We did the big tour, starting south of Carall Bernat, then to the north to Tascon Grande. Large cracks,a lot of large groupers, shoals of sars and oblades. Morays, gorgonians...

Trip: Estartit 2008

Trip with my scubadiving club to Estartit. Very bad viz (between 4m the first day and 10+m the last day).Large groupers are still here :)
Water temp was between 20°C and 22°C with a termocline to 20m (30m at Tascon Petit).
